"Paula Ashby knows roughly how many steps it will take to get from our table to her car parked outside.

She keeps a running tally throughout the day of each stride she takes, carrying with her a stool for long shopping trips and lineups. The pretty brunette, who until recently had planned for a life in the mountains, knows she has to ration those steps. She only has a limited amount.

Sitting in a Canmore coffee shop, Ashby admits it took a long time before she could look at the mountains, a lasting reminder of her life?s disappointment, without a pang of sadness. A year and a half years ago, she was forced to re-evaluate her future when she was diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, also known as chronic regional pain syndrome..."
